TY so much, Hollie! If you want to do well known musicals, but want to start off small, go to MTI Shows and look at the jr and kids versions of the big names. There’s no shame in doing those. I did them when I was at two smaller schools in the past and it’s still a great experience. I could do a whole video on fundraising ideas that have worked for me too if you’re interested! I honestly have been wanting to make a video about the different publishing companies I use too.

Shoot! I just looked on my playlist and it looks like I never filmed it. (Good intentions). I need to film that still. I’m directing a musical right now but I should be able to film more on spring break.

@@KalasStage I’m subscribed so I’ll be running back to your channel when I see a new one posted! 😊 I do have a question if you don’t mind- do you find balancing work and family life difficult? Being a teacher is already so time and emotionally intensive but I can imagine for music and theater teachers, even more so.. I have two little ones, so that’s the only thing that’s got me a bit nervous. 😵‍💫

I absolutely find work and life balance difficult. I mostly work 10 hour days when doing a show and 12-15 hour days during tech and show week. I have a 19 month old. When I look back on his pictures from last year, I cry because I missed out on so much with him because I was always working with other people’s children. This year, with my musical, I am balancing it more. If they have vocal rehearsal with our vocal coach, I now go home when I’d usually stay. Same with our choreographer. I am wanting to get an assistant or 2nd theatre teacher in the future to help lighten the load.

Mine are almost 4 and 6, and still the thought of going back to work full-time makes me feel emotional. Sounds like you are a wonderful mama. Break a leg with your musical!

Thank you! Also, don’t feel like you have to work for time (if it’s financially feasible for you not to). You could always teach theatre in the mornings as a part time somewhere and have your afternoon & evening for your kids. OR something I’m playing around with is directing a play with my advanced acting class during school day and having that be my fall show next year so it’s not such a huge commitment after school.

Idk what BVR is but since you have a bachelors degree in theatre, and if you want to teach, start looking for a teaching job. Across the nation, there is a teacher shortage. Your state education board can give you information on how to become emergency certified. Some colleges may even offer a 1 year online program to become certified without entering a Masters program. Someone I know just did this at Thomas Moore college in KY (online). If you don’t want to reach but just want to be involved in theatre, find a theatre fb group in your local and surrounding community because they’re always posting job opportunities and auditions there.

Good luck! Use info from my latest teacher video, physical characterization and have the interview panel get up and rehearse different physicality‘s for different emotions, types of characters, age. Ask them what the observed happening when going from one extreme to the next and stress the importance of physical characterization when acting. This is what I’ve done at every interview. The panel has fun because they get to laugh with and at their colleagues! PS, do a quick shake down warm up with them prior to the movement activity.

Yes! Theatre is an elective & counts towards our state’s Arts & Humanities graduation requirements. I also run the theatre dept. after school.
